Research Institutes

Institute for Education

Under this institute, interdisciplinary, comprehensive, and clinical research studies on the following issues are carried out: various issues concerning education at universities and graduate schools, such as lifelong learning, the improvement of education methods, adjustment to different cultures, counseling, and the self-evaluation of evening graduate schools and women's universities, as well as educational pathologies such as truancy, delinquency, bullying, and disorder in the classroom. In addition, an independent graduate course (evening graduate school) featuring a clinical education major, which is the first of its kind in Japan, was established on the basis of research studies carried out in this institute.

Institute for Developmental and Clinical Psychology

This laboratory was established in 1979. The laboratory has two divisions: the "division of psychoeducational consultation" and the "division of developmental psychology." The former division provides psychological play therapy and counseling for infants and children who have intellectual and emotional disorders, psychosomatic disorders, autistic tendencies, and maladjusted behavior. The latter division offers studies of intellectual activities, emotional development, and character formation of people from childhood over the course of their lives. This laboratory also functions as a counseling institution for graduate students majoring in clinical psychology in the graduate school, and serves as a forum of research and practical training for students who aim to become qualified psychologists and clinical psychologists.

Institute for Linguistic Cultural Studies

In this institute, issues related to modern Japanese language are studied, by investigating novel and interesting rules casually used in the Japanese language. From various viewpoints, specifically focusing on aspects such as different dialects, etymology, and the speech patterns of teenagers, language used in daily life is focused on, the problems are brought to the attention of society, and research results are reported. The language culture seminar is held every year, and issues related to the Japanese language are discussed together with students and people in the local community.

Institute of Esthetics in Everyday Life

In response to the trend of the current era in which when the focus of people's concerns for life environments has been changing from something that is practical and economic to something that is esthetic and spiritual, the institute was established in 1990. Workshops have already been held to discuss the following annual themes: flowers, trees, night, wind, expression, uniqueness, courtesy, life, manners, imitation, the public, ability, technique, art, skill, and style. This year's theme is "dignity." This institute also promotes studies on changes of consciousness concerning life environments, the basic theory of esthetics in everyday life, and field work related to these topics.

Institute for Educational Computing Research

In this center, the effects of multimedia on education and culture in our advanced information society are studied. The center also promotes informational education, prepares environments conducive to studying, and supports education and research activities using IT. In addition, the center operates the campus network system and manages the approximately 900 computers used for information education and self-study by students. Furthermore, educational activities and academic research activities using the teleconference system are carried out.

Institute for Biosciences

This institute was established for the purpose of achieving essential understanding of life, and healthy longevity. To accomplish this purpose, a wide range of research studies in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, bioorganic chemistry, physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, food chemistry and ethics are carried out. In addition, academic lectures and workshops concerning these topics are held to promote advanced technical education and research in this field.

Institute for World Health Development

A healthy and long life is the common wish of everyone. A method applying diet and exercises, "genome plus," which transcends genetics and by which even people who are genetically prone to lifestyle-related disease can prevent disease must be established so that everyone can enjoy a healthy life. The laboratory, in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), promotes research targeting humans so that people can cultivate and improve their "ability to be healthy" so that they can enjoy a vigorous life.

Institute for Turkish Culture Studies

The Institute of Turkish Culture Studies (ITCS) was established in July of 2009. The ITCS is committed to various activities in cooperation with the Research Center of Japanese Culture Studies at Bahcesehir University, Turkey.
