Graduate School Master grade 1
Integrated Design Studio I
In Integrated Design Studio I students build full-scale models and tackle relevant assignments on structures, building construction methods, and materials for those models. In the first assignment of Integrated Design Studio I, gEarth-conscious house of assembly production typeh, students build a full scale model with wooden blocks and design a house using the blocks. In the second assignment, gEarth-conscious, temporary Chapelh, students build a full scale model and design a chapel using 3-dimensional space frame system and wooden blocks. In the third assignment, gMembrane and Space Frame Architecture - a child-care center with a semi-open play area -h, students build a full scale model and design a childrenfs house using membrane, 3-dimensional space frame system and wooden blocks.

Work
The purpose of this studio is to develop planning considering the characteristic of the material. In addition to the wooden block and space frame learned in the earlier studio, the membrane was added. It is also based on the short essay and research for the space and children during the studio.
At the presentation, students receive technical advice from the teachers of structure, equipment, and construction. This is also a feature of the studio in the graduate school. As a visiting lecturer, Mr. Shiro Mitsumune (Atelier B) participated. gThe theme is a very difficult project. It is important to use each materials.h hIn the planning of space for children, think about the unity of outside and inside space. Also consider the safety. h

Study Model
There was a lecture on membrane by Mr. Akihiro Noguchi from Taiyo Kogyo Corporation. He explained the characteristics of the material, transmission of light, weather resistance, and strengths, the latest membrane material etc. Moreover, abundant material samples and photographs of newest projects were introduces to explain construction techniques and an the membrane used in the interior. Students asked many specific questions considering their plans.

Conversation with teacher
The students presented their plans in the mid-jury. Although students have built up their images through the experience of covering the space@frame by membrane and visiting the architecture of membrane structure, when it came to form their image into shape, it is required to consider an endurance of the frame against the membranefs tension and dealing with rainwater and wind. To realize their own image of space, we need to clear various problems. Mr. Akihiro Noguchi from Taiyo Kogyo Corporation participated as a visiting lecturer, gave advices on frame and membrane especially from structural point of view. Students obtained many hints, and worked on making the idea further after the jury.
