The opening ceremony of the “Architecture and Culture through the Silk Road Galleries” of the Institute of Tukish Culture Studies was held at Koshien Hall on Sunday, October 30, 2011.
The galleries refer to the ceramic gallery, the Turkish culture gallery, and the carpentry tools gallery. The ceramic gallery has been newly established to display ceramics related to architecture and culture in regions around the Silk Road, e.g. Persian tiles, architectural terracottas, Chinese pottery warriors, Japanese traditional tiles, bricks of Japanese modern architecture, tiles of Koshien Hall and so forth. Along with the opening of the ceramic gallery, the existing Turkish culture gallery and the carpentry tools gallery were remodelled and also reopened.
Many people attended the ceremony, including Ms. Aysegul Atmaca, the cultural and information counselor of Turkish embassy, Dr. Senay Yal?in, the president of Bahcesehir University, and his wife, Dr. Ahmet Eyuce, the dean of the faculty of architecture and design of Bahcesehir University, and his wife, Mr. Hideo Tamai, the former commissioner for Cultural Affairs, Mr. Akiharu Manabe, the superintendent of schools of Nishinomiya city, Mr. Ryo Okawara, the chair of the board of trustees of Mukogawa Women’s University, Dr. Naosuke Itoigawa, the president of Mukogawa Women’s University, and the people who cooperated with the opening of these galleries, including Dr. Tomoko Masuya, a professor of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo, Mr. Masahiko Shibatsuji, Mr. Daisuke Mitsumoto and Mr. Kunihiko Honjo. |

Two first-year master’s degree students, who participated in ICSA in Istanbul 2011 at Bahcesehir University, gave an opening address in Turkish wearing Turkish traditional dress. First, they expressed to Turkish people their condolences at the sad news of Turkish earthquake. They also expressed their gratitude for the exchanges between the two universities in the past and looked forward to further exchange in the future, with the opening of the galleries as a start.
Dr. Shigeyuki Okazaki, the director of the Institute of Turkish Culture Studies at Mukogawa Women’s University, made a speech on the history of exchange with Bahcesehir University and the background of opening the galleries.
Then, the ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the ceramic gallery, and each gallery was shown to the people.

After showing the guests around the galleries, greetings were made at the West Hall by the host and the guests. The chair of the board of trustees of Mukogawa Women’s University, Mr. Ryo Okawara said, “I am deeply grateful to the people who cooperated with the opening of these galleries. I hope that with these galleries, more people will be interested in the architecture and culture in the countries located along the Silk Road including Japan and Turkey.” Then, greetings were made by Ms. Aysegul Atmaca, the cultural and information counselor of Turkish embassy, Dr. Senay Yalcin, the president of Bahcesehir University, Mr. Hideo Tamai, the former commissioner for Cultural Affairs, and Mr. Akiharu Manabe, the superintendent of schools of Nishinomiya city. At the end of Dr. Senay Yalcin’s greeing, Turkish traditional tiles were presented from Bahcesehir University to Mukogawa Women’s University to display at the Turkish culture gallery. |

Next, commemorative speeches were given. Dr. Tomoko Masuya, the professor of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo, who wrote explanatory notes on tiles at the ceramic gallery, made a speech entitled “Islamic Tiles from the 12th to 14th Centuries”. IIntelligibly, she explained the technique, shape, and paintings on the Islamic tiles from the 12th to 14th centuries while also going back to explain about the tiles at the gallery. Then, Mr. Masahiko Shibatsuji, the presidency of the Institute for Arts & Crafts, made a speech entitled & Crafts, made a speech entitled "Why Did I Collect These Tiles?" Finally, Dr. Senay Yalcin, the president of Bahcesehir University, made a speech entitled "The Importance of Intercultural Activities." He said, "Now that it is possible to easily obtain information about the culture of other countries through the internet or travel easily by airplanes, it becomes more and more important to understand other cultures and have intercultural exchange, in order to grow while protect one’s own culture at the same time."
At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Naosuke Itoigawa, the president of Mukogawa Women's University, and Dr. Ahmet Eyuce, the dean of the faculty of architecture and design of Bahcesehir University, gave closing remarks.
