科目目的
Course Objectives
[Mainstream]
Every four weeks the following skills are practiced for one unit: students first practice predicting, skimming, and scanning of the reading texts; the focus then shifts to comprehension and discussion of the texts.
[ACE]
In this course, students will be taking introductory steps in the research and writing process. Students will read about contemporary socio-cultural, economic and political issues, both local and global. While doing so, students will analyze and synthesize information, building towards a research paper.
到達目標
Class Goal
[Mainstream]
This course develops reading comprehension and writing skills through analysis, explanation, and practice with a focus on content. Practice of relevant grammar and vocabulary is integrated with academic content in each unit.
[ACE]
The goal of this course is to equip students for the completion of their senior theses, in addition to expanding their linguistic, socio-cultural and academic knowledge related to contemporary socio-cultural, economic and political issues, both local and global.
授業内容
The Content of the Course
Students will review essay writing, and then begin to explore the research process, from inquiry to writing. In doing so, they will review and or become familiar with topics including plagiarism, selecting resources from which to draw, and referencing, and citation format. Students will be developing the same topic, from essay to research paper, throughout the course.

Additionally, students will explore local, national, international (regional), and global issues via the reading component of the course. Students will be required to write a one-page (typed, double-spaced) reading reflection for each reading assigned, and will bring this reflection to class on the day they are scheduled to discuss the reading in-class.

The course will use a writing text, while articles will be provided for reading by the instructor.
