科目目的 Course Objectives |
In this class, students share their perspectives on historic and contemporary topics, in relation to Japanese culture. After reading short articles, students can understand more about Japanese customs through comparison to other cultural perspectives. The objective of this class is to develop students’ curiosity about how other people understand culture, language, and values. |

MWU students can expand their knowledge about Japanese culture and ideas. This class centers on learning to identify a wide range of opinions and ideas from an international point of view. To achieve this goal, students need to become more globally minded and gain knowledge of cultural trends and topics. In addition, students will use critical thinking skills while reading, writing, and engaging in conversation. |
授業内容 The Content of the Course |
Trying to find the answers to ‘why' regarding cultural trends or actions’ means having a cultural curiosity about other people. The reasons for people’s actions can be discovered by learning to see the world in new ways. This means increasing an understanding of the world by asking ‘why’. This course includes discussion about the influence of social, cultural, and economic forces that shape attitudes, beliefs, and choices made by people today. To personalize this class, students will choose a topic they want to explore as part of the final project. |

授業方法 Class Method |
Students can enjoy learning societal values and language skills together as they discuss the meaning of communication and academic styles from an intercultural perspective. Classroom methods include listening practice, role plays about characters from the textbook, learning new words and expressions from text dialogues. Materials in this course will be presented through a textbook that uses a variety of learning styles and discussion-based activities. Students can say their opinions through presentations, short assignments, and lively classroom discussions. In this course, students can learn about their personal understanding of communication as they discuss about common topics introduced through activities and discussions. |

Self-study hours depend on the assignments given each week. Students prepare for this class by being aware of global issues and international culture around them. Students can use their critical thinking skills as they engage with others about common societal issues. |

・平常点(100点) 平常点等配点内訳:Grades will be calculated from: homework (25点), in-class activities (25点), response assignments (25点) and project presentations (25点). |
課題(試験やレポート等)に対するフィードバックの方法 Task Feedback |
The teacher will provide comments about the students’ skill areas where they need more development. Communication to students is done in multiple ways: written comments, in-class conversations, e-mail responses to questions and whole class feedback that is generalized for everyone’s benefit. |

This class is conducted in English, and the materials will be at an intermediate level. Japanese students should have TOEIC 500 or above. Students will be expected to do homework and contribute their ideas in discussion format. This class is an active style of class, so students need to be prepared to use English in every class. All students from all departments are welcome to join this class. Important: The policy for the number of absences: If you are absent 5 or more times, you will not pass the class. * If you are late or leave early, 3 times will be counted as 1 absence. |

実務経験と授業との関連 How the Instructors' Experiences will shape Course Contents |
The instructor is a former teacher from MUSC in Spokane, Washington. She has focused on English language communication and culture for Japanese students since 2003. Living internationally (in Japan, Korea, Canada) accounts for the wider perspectives of the instructor that she uses in discussion with students. |
