科目目的
Course Objectives
Everyday something new is being made, being discussed, being explored. Through our personal interests and ideas, we can enjoy sharing together about the current trends in society. Students will discuss about interesting current issues and expand their knowledge about how they contribute to the trends in Japan and internationally. Students will practice their skills of critical thinking and learn to express their opinions clearly as they present and discuss information together.

Class Goal
Students can enjoy developing their English skills as they discuss about current topics that are related to high interest topics. The goal of this course is to increase the students’ knowledge of the ways that society influences people through entertainment, popular culture, and current trends. The discussion style of this class means students can advance in describing their opinions and learn from their classmates, too.

授業内容
The Content of the Course
The contents of this course focus on preparing students to be well informed about the good and bad points of current trends in the areas of advertising, education, cosmetics, health, and culture. There will be an emphasis on communicative awareness as students learn about trends that gain attention for good and bad reasons. Students will identify differing viewpoints about specific groups of people by considering how the culture in Japan has influenced them in their opinions and stereotypes.

授業方法
Class Method
Materials in this course will be presented through a variety of learning styles and discussion based approaches. Students will say their opinions through presentations, short assignments, and lively classroom discussions.

Following this course, students can use their critical thinking skills as they engage with others about current issues.

Self-study hours depend on the assignments given each week.

Evaluation Method
・平常点(100点) 平常点等配点内訳:Textbook homework (25%) (5点x 4), in class activities (20%) (5点x 4), short presentations (15点), and short assignments (20点) final project: (20点)
課題(試験やレポート等)に対するフィードバックの方法
Task Feedback
The teacher will write or say comments about the students’ skill areas where they need more development. Communication to students is done in multiple ways: written comments, in-class conversations, e-mail responses to questions and whole class feedback that is generalized for everyone’s benefit.

Notices
This class is conducted in English, and the materials will be at an intermediate level. Japanese students should have TOEIC 500 or above. Students will be expected to do homework and contribute their ideas in discussion format.

This class is an active style of class, so students need to be prepared to use English in every class. All students from all departments are welcome to join this class.

The policy for the number of absences:
If you are absent 5 or more times, you will not pass the class.
* If you are late or leave early, 3 times will be counted as 1 absence.

How the Instructors' Experiences will shape Course Contents
The instructor is a former teacher from MUSC in Spokane, Washington. She has focused on English language communication and culture for Japanese students since 2003. Living internationally (in Japan, Korea, Canada) accounts for the wider perspectives of the instructor that she uses in discussion with students.
